Animal Photography

If you get a thrill out of animal photography you know that it is unlike any other kind of photography. Animal photography takes patience and a lot of practice to get it right. Here are some tips that will help you get your shot if you are new to animal photography:

  • Creeping up to animals is a sure fire way to get them to run off or to charge at you. Try to use a camera with a good zoom. That way you can get your shot without scaring away your subjects.

  • Use a digital camera that will enable you to take a lot of pictures quickly. This is the only way to truly captivate the random movements of animals.

  • If possible, try to avoid taking pictures with a flash. You never know when a flash will startle the animals and make them run or charge.

  • One of the key rules that many new animal photography students do not know is that you should try not to smell! Perfume and other odors can give away your location to animals. You may smell pretty, but the only thing you will probably attract is mosquitoes and other pesky insects.

  • Another golden rule of animal photography is to use a quiet camera. Animals have keen hearing. The smallest of noises can make them run away.

Before you just head out into the wild to start taking pictures of animals, talk to experts or officials about the types of animals you are hoping to photograph in the wild. These people can sometimes give you inside tips to the animals which will make your picture taking process easier.  For instance, they may know the exact location or time of day that deer gather in a particular area. This kind of information is invaluable in animal photography.
