Flash Photography
Flash photography is an interesting subject. Any individual who takes pictures regularly will come to understand that the in camera flash usually doesn’t do much to help a picture. In fact, it can make pictures look worse. It can produce flat lighting, make harsh shadows and those dreaded red eyes.
With a little bit of study amateur photographers soon learn that flash photography using the build in camera’s flash just does not work. The reason is the flash is located too close to the lens. The closer the lens is to the flash the worse the pictures will look. Professional photographers generally urge newbie photographers to purchase a separate flash gun. These separate flash guns will enable you to bounce the light where you need it which will make your pictures softer and more natural looking.
If you are stuck doing flash photography with a built in flash, there are some things that you can do to make your pictures turn out as best they can. First, try to position your subjects away from walls or position them against the darkest wall you can find. This will help to minimize shadows or outlines that are produced during flash photography.
Some cameras come with a pre-flash which is intended to help reduce red eye. However, the problem that many people run into with this is that the subjects see the pre-flash and think you have already taken their picture. They may move away and ruin the shot.
Don’t get discouraged if you cannot afford a new camera with a separate flash gun. There is software available that you can use to edit your flash photography. With just a few clicks of the mouse you can have those pictures looking professional in no time. This software is a good investment for any hobby photographer.
