Underwater Photography

Underwater photography is the most difficult kind of photography to capture.  This is because the photographer not only has to focus on the pictures they are taking, but must also be able to swim and breathe underwater simultaneously.  The cameras used in underwater photography are also different for obvious reasons.  The equipment used must be rugged and waterproof and is often much more expensive than traditional photography equipment.

Many divers love to take underwater photos of things like coral reefs, fish, dolphins, and sunken ships.  Perhaps the most important thing when partaking in underwater photography is learning about the various exposure types and lengths.  Since light is different underwater than it is on the land, this can often pose quite a challenge.  Many people who have attempted underwater photography will tell you that it may have taken them several tries before they learned how to master this wonderful and magical form of photography.

The results of underwater photography are often quite astounding.  Beautiful shots of schools of fish and lovely corals can be seen.  Many times the beauty and depth of the photo depends upon the location that the photographer is taking the picture.  If you choose to go out into the all natural Australian coral reefs, you are bound to get a much more exciting picture than if you went out to, say, the man made lake behind your house!  Much like other forms of nature photography, underwater photography often depends upon luck and chance.  You may find a beautiful school of angel fish swimming by, or you may find out that nothing is out and about at the time you are underwater.  It really is a technical and difficult form of photography, but the results can be breathtaking and produce images that will provide you with unforgettable memories.
